Passing a Prop Firm Eval in One Day Using News Volatility

The whole prop firm evaluation thing is kind of strange when you think about it. You already know how to trade. You have a system that works. But now you have to sit there for two or three weeks grinding out small percentages just to prove you can follow rules. It's not really testing your trading anymore. It's testing your patience.

If you want to skip that part and just get to the funded stage, there is a way. It uses the volatility from NFP, CPI, and FOMC releases. Not to gamble on the direction. Just to capture the first big move that almost always happens when the number drops.

I'll explain how I do it, what to watch out for, and a few things I learned the hard way.

But first, let's be completely honest about what happens when this goes wrong.

The Reality Check You Actually Need

This strategy is high risk. Not "maybe I'll lose a few percent" high risk. I'm talking about "the account is gone in under ten seconds" high risk.

If the market whipsaws and hits your stop before your take profit, you are done. There is no recovery trade. There is no waiting for it to come back. The drawdown limit on most evals is tight enough that a 40-point move against you with the position size required for this strategy will blow straight through it. You will not get a second chance on that account.

This is not a strategy where you lose small and try again tomorrow. If it works, you pass the eval in seconds. If it fails, the eval is over. That's the trade-off. You are exchanging the slow grind for a binary outcome. Pass or blow.

If you are not comfortable losing the entire evaluation fee on a single news spike, do not trade this. Go back to the normal daily grind. There is no shame in that. This method is for people who have already accepted that they are buying a lottery ticket with better odds than a lottery ticket but worse odds than normal trading.

Now that we've got that out of the way, here's how it works.

The Setup: Buy Stop and Sell Stop Before the Number

I don't care what the CPI number is. Hot, cold, whatever. I care about the spike that happens right after.

About thirty seconds before the release—usually 8:30 AM EST for US stuff—I place two pending orders on NQ futures:

Buy Stop: 40 points above current price.
Sell Stop: 40 points below current price.

Both orders have a Take Profit and Stop Loss already attached. When the news hits, price jumps through one of them. The order gets filled. The other one just sits there or I cancel it after.

That's it. I'm in and out before most people even processed what the number was.

What Happens When It Fails

Let me paint the picture of what failure looks like so you're not surprised.

You place your stops 40 points away. NFP drops. Price shoots up 45 points, triggers your buy stop, and then immediately reverses. Within three seconds it's down 30 points from your entry. Your stop loss is at 40 points from entry. Price slices through it like it's not even there. Because of slippage during the volatility, your fill is maybe 45 or 50 points against you. On four NQ contracts at $20 per point, that's a $3,600 to $4,000 loss. On a $50k eval with a $2,000 drawdown limit, the account is blown before you even process what just happened.

This happens. I've had it happen. Anyone who trades news long enough has had it happen.

The only thing you can control is your position size and your stop distance. And on an eval with a fixed drawdown limit, those two numbers are locked in tight. There is no "just widen the stop" because the drawdown limit won't allow it.

The Math: Sizing So You Hit Target in One Spike

You don't use normal lot sizes for this. You calculate backward from your profit target.

Formula is simple:

Profit Target ÷ (Expected Move × Point Value) = Lot Size

Example for a $50k eval that needs $3,000 profit:

Trading NQ where 1 point = $20 per contract
Expecting to catch 40 points

$3,000 ÷ (40 × $20) = 3.75 contracts. Round it to 4 contracts and you're at $80 per point.

Set Take Profit at around 38 points and you're done. The market usually moves that far within seconds. You don't need it to trend all day. Just the first push.

But understand the other side of this equation. With 4 contracts on NQ, a 25-point move against you is a $2,000 loss. That's the entire drawdown on most $50k accounts. If the market spikes the wrong way first and hits your opposing stop before reversing toward your target, you're out. That's the binary outcome.

Futures Work Better Than Forex for This

I trade this almost exclusively on NQ. Tried forex a few times. EUR/USD and GBP/USD during NFP. The spike is there but it fades so fast. Big institutions are on both sides of the currency market so the order flow is more balanced. You get a 40 pip move and before your bracket even registers the fill, half the move is already gone.

Futures are cleaner for this. NQ especially. When a CPI print comes out hot and rate expectations shift, equity futures react in one direction with real momentum. The move holds for a few seconds. That's all you need.

Also the point value on NQ is $20 per contract. That means you need fewer contracts to hit the same dollar target compared to something with a $10 tick value. Less contracts means less slippage risk if something goes wrong. And on a news spike, slippage is already a factor. Why make it worse.

One thing to check before you trade: some prop firms use micro contracts by default or have different point values in their simulated environment. Always verify the contract specs in the platform before you calculate your size. If the firm uses $2 per point instead of $20, your math changes completely.

Use Bracket Orders or Don't Bother

If you try to enter manually and then drag a stop loss, you're already too late. During CPI the spread can go from 1 tick to 15 ticks instantly. Your internet is not fast enough. Nobody's is.

You need a Bracket Order. Entry, Take Profit, Stop Loss all sent together. The moment the stop order triggers, the risk management is active. No manual clicking.

Also don't try to be clever with a Sell Limit at the same level as your Buy Stop. I've seen people do this to catch a reversal. What actually happens is the wide spread triggers the Sell Limit first. Now you're short while price is pumping up. Then the Buy Stop triggers and you have two opposite positions both losing money. Just use normal brackets.

Things I Check Before a News Trade

This part matters more than the trade itself. Prop firms change their rules constantly. What worked last month might get you denied today.

Before I even open the platform on news day I check three things:

Consistency Rule: If the firm says no single day can be more than 30% of total profit, this strategy is useless for that firm. Skip it.
News Trading Policy: Some allow it on evaluation but not on funded. That's fine. I only need it for the eval anyway.
Daily Drawdown: Calculate if the stop loss distance fits within the daily loss limit. If the stop loss would break the daily drawdown, reduce lot size. If reducing lot size means you can no longer hit the profit target, then this account is not suitable for the strategy. Don't force it.

Also a practical tip. If you're already at 80% of the profit target, don't go full size. Use a smaller lot just to cross the finish line. Blowing an eval that's almost passed because you got greedy is a terrible feeling. I've done it. Don't do it.

What to Do After the Trade

If the trade hits and you pass the eval, close the platform. Don't look at the chart again. Don't think "maybe I'll add a little more profit just to be safe." That's how people give back 2% in the afternoon and fail the consistency rule retroactively.

You passed. You're done. Go outside or something.

Which Firms Actually Let You Do This

Alright, so this is the part people actually care about. Without the right firm, this whole strategy is dead before you even open the platform. You need three things from a prop firm for this to work:

No consistency rule (or a very loose one)
News trading allowed during evaluation
No minimum trading days

A Note About Rules Changing

Prop firm rules change all the time. What works today might be gone next month. Before you buy any evaluation, do yourself a favor and check three things directly in their FAQ or Discord:

Is news trading allowed during the evaluation phase?
Is there a consistency rule that limits how much profit can come from a single day?
Is there a minimum number of trading days?

If the answer to all three is what you need, then send it. If not, find another firm. There's always another one.

Evaluation vs Funded Rules

One more thing that catches people. Some firms let you trade news on the eval but then restrict it once you're funded. That's fine if your only goal is passing the eval fast. But if you plan to keep trading news after you get the funded account, you need to check the funded-stage rules separately.

Always verify the current rules yourself before clicking buy. Don't trust a blog post from six months ago. Don't even trust this one without double checking. Rules change on a Tuesday and nobody sends you an email about it.

Final Thought

This method is not for learning how to trade. It's for people who already know what they're doing and just want to get through the evaluation phase faster. If you're still figuring out risk management, don't touch this. Practice on a demo first.

Understand the trade you are making. You are betting that the initial news spike moves far enough in one direction to hit your profit target before it reverses through your stop. If it does, you win. If it whipsaws, you lose the entire evaluation fee.

That's the deal. Take it or leave it.
